Details: Ivan Cornwallis Strutt (1916-1943), born 7 February 1916, son of Geoffrey St. John Strutt CBE JP and Sybil Eyre Strutt, of St Catherine's Court, Bath, Somerset.
Attended St David's School, Reigate, Surrey.
Attended Sherborne School (School House) September 1929-December 1931.
Studied in Switzerland and at Peterhouse, Cambridge.
WW2, Squadron-Leader in the 104 Squadron Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (RAFVR).
Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) in 1942, the citation reads: 'During an operational sortie one night in October, 1942, this officer displayed exceptional determination to complete his allotted task. In the face of heavy anti-aircraft fire he flew over the target area for some 40 minutes, pressing home his attacks and obtaining photographs. His aircraft sustained much damage making it difficult to manoeuvre, and he was unable to take avoiding action when anti-aircraft fire and searchlights were encountered on the homeward flight. Before reaching his base he observed one of our aircraft which had come down on the sea. In spite of his own difficulties Squadron Leader Strutt flew over the position for half an hour until he saw torchlight signals from the stranded crew. He then flew on to base and finding a means of lowering his undercarriage, was able to land his damaged aircraft safely. His example of courage and devotion to duty was most praiseworthy.'
Killed in action over Sousse, North Africa, on 6 January 1943, aged 26.
