Details: John Noon (1916-1943), born on 14 April 1916 at Wantage, Berkshire, only son of Rev. Francis Harold Noon and Dorothy Gertrude Noon, of Hermitage Rectory, Newbury, Berkshire, formerly of West Hanney Vicarage, Wantage.


Attended Dragon School, Oxford.


Attended Sherborne School (Abbeylands) January 1930-March 1934; House Prefect; Class Leader with Badge; Lance-Corporal in OTC.


Working in insurance.


WW2, Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery, seconded to 1 H.A.A. Regiment, Hong Kong and Singapore Royal Artillery. Died while a prisoner of war at Kokopo, East New Britain, Papua New Guinea on 2 February 1943, aged 27.

Obituary, 'The Shirburnian', December 1945: 'John Noon was at Abbeylands from 1930 to 1934. He was a Lieutenant in the 1st H.K.S., R.A. and was reported missing in February 1942. He was later heard to be a prisoner of war in Japanese hands. At the end of the war it was learnt that he had died in captivity. He will be remembered by many Shirburnians for his simplicity and cheerfulness.'
