Details: John Fairfax Carlyle (1919-1945), born 29 March 1919, son of Thomas Fairfax Carlyle and Isabel Margaret Carlyle of Eastfields, Long Street, Sherborne, Dorset (formerly of 10 Ormond Avenue, Hampton, Middlesex).


Attended Sherborne Preparatory School.


Attended Sherborne School (Day boy) September 1933-December 1935, (Abbeylands) January 1936-July 1937.


WW2, Squadron-Leader (Pilot), 237 Squadron, Royal Air Force, formerly 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Tank Regiment, Royal Armoured Corps. Killed in action in Italy on 18 April 1945, aged 26.

Obituary, 'The Shirburnian', December 1945: 'John Carlyle came to Abbeylands in 1933. He left in 1937 and went to an Army Coach and passed into Sandhurst in November 1937. After leaving Sandhurst he went into the Royal Tank Corps. He was seconded to the R.A.F. in 1940 and served in Madagascar, North Africa, South France and Italy, where he was killed in April 1945. He was Squadron Leader of the 237 Rhodesian Squadron of Spitfires. His commanding officer wrote that John was loved by all the Pilots and ground crew. For a long time he acted as Flight Lieutenant and did magnificent work.'
