Details: Mark Tyzack Kirkwood (1915-1940), born 18 May 1915, son of John Tyzack Kirkwood (Old Shirburnian) and Victoria May Titcombe, Moorings, West Chobham, Surrey. Half-brother of Pamela Anne Kirkwood (b.1905).


Attended Fairfield Preparatory School, Malvern, Worcestershire.


Attended Sherborne School (Abbeylands) January 1929-July 1932.


Cadet in the Merchant Navy.


Acting Pilot Officer, Royal Air Force, 1936.


WW2, Flight-Lieutenant, 603 Squadron, Royal Air Force. Killed in action when shot down in the English Channel east of Deal, Kent on 8 November 1940, aged 25.

Obituary in 'The Shirburnian', December 1944: 'Mark Kirkwood, who was killed in action while serving with the R.A.F., was the son of Mr and Mrs J.T. Kirkwood, Moorings, West Cobham, Surrey. He was at Abbeylands from 1929 to 1932. He will be remembered by his many friends at Sherborne for his very sincere kindliness, and his quiet unassuming disposition.'
