Details: Thomas Frederick Nichols (1920-1941), born at 4 Donnington Park Road, Hampstead, London, on 17 February 1920, son of Frederick William Rawl Nichols and Kate Edith Nichols (nee Aldridge) of Silver Ridge, East Drive, Wentworth, Surrey, formerly of 22 Cleveland Square, Lancaster Gate, London.


Attended Seafield School, Bexhill-on-Sea.


Attended Sherborne School (The Green) September 1933-July 1937; 3rd XI (1937); Lance-Corporal in OTC.


Member of the Old Shirburnian Golfing Society.


Queens' College, Cambridge (engineering).


WW2, Ordinary Seaman, HMS Hood, Royal Navy. Killed in action on 24 May 1941, aged 21, when HMS Hood was sunk during the Battle of the Denmark Strait when it was struck by several German shells fired by the German battleship Bismarck and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugene.

Obituary, 'The Shirburnian', December 1944: 'Thomas Frederick Nichols, O.S., R.N., was lost in H.M.S. Hood in May 1941. On leaving School he went up to Cambridge to read Engineering and joined the Navy soon after the outbreak of war.'
