Details: Robert William Michael de Winton (1908-1947), born 16 September 1908, son of William E. de Winton, 19 Ennismore Gardens, London.


Attended preparatory schools at St Aubyn, Rottingdean, and 134 Sloane Street, London.


Attended Sherborne School (School House) January 1922-July 1927.


Sandhurst; Gordon Highlanders.


WW2, Brigadier, General Staff and Gordon Highlanders, commanding the 13th Infantry Brigade. Awarded the D.S.O. and bar. Assassinated at Pola, Yugoslavia on 10 February 1947, aged 38.

Obituary, 'The Shirburnian', Lent 1947: 'Brigadier R.W.M. de Winton was shot and killed by a woman, an Italian school teacher, at Pola, Venezia Giula on February 10th. He was 39, and at the time was commanding the 13th British Infantry Brigade. He leaves a wife and three months old son. The son of W.E. de Winton, he came to Sherborne in 1922 and on leaving went, to the R.M.C., Sandhurst. He was commissioned lieutenant in the Gordon Highlanders in 1932 and in the late war was awarded the D.S.O. in 1944 and bar in 1945.'
