Details: Geoffrey William Hay (1878-1915), born 6 May 1878, son of Alexander Sowerby Hay and Isabella Jameson Hay of Sacombe Park, Ware, Hertfordshire, formerly of 21 Fitzjohn's Avenue, London.


Attended Hartford House preparatory school, Winchfield.


Attended Sherborne School (School House) May 1893-1896; 1st XV rugby football team 1895, 1896.


Received his first commission in April 1900, and, reaching the rank of captain in 1909, retired two years later. He rejoined from the Reserve of Officers on the outbreak of war.


WW1, Captain in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, 3rd Bn. (Reserve). In August 1914 placed on coast defence at Felixstowe; December 1914, joined 1st Bn. Loyal North Lancashire Regiment in France. Slightly wounded at Festubert on 21 December 1914. Mentioned in despatches. Killed in action at Richebourg-l'Avoue on 9 May 1915.
