Details: Claude Martin (1877-1917), born 7 August 1877, youngest son of Thomas Martin and Harriette Martin of Treverbyn, Plympton, Devon.

 

Attended Plymouth College.

 

Attended Sherborne School (Harper House) May 1893-August 1896; 6th form; Prefect; Latin Prose prize 1895; 1st XI cricket team 1895, 1896; 1st XV rugby football team 1894, 1895; Public School Boxing 1895.

 

Exhibitioner, Worcester College, Oxford, 1896.

 

Partner in the firm of Messrs. Martin Brothers, Plymouth.

Served in the Boer War with the Manchester Regiment, and resigned his commission in 1903.

 

WW1, 2nd Lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards. Killed at St Quentin Ridge on 1 December 1917.

Obituary, 'The Shirburnian', February 1918: 'Second Lieut. Claude Martin, Coldstream Guards (killed in action on December 1st) was the youngest son of the late Mr Thomas Martin and of Mrs Martin of Treverbyn, Plympton, and was a partner in the firm of Messrs. Martin Brothers, Plymouth. Born in 1877, he was educated at Sherborne and Worcester College, Oxford. He served in the Boer War with the Manchester Regiment, and resigned his commission in 1903. Rejoining on the outbreak of war, he was given a commission in the Coldstream Guards.'
