Details: John Spencer McGowan (1897-1916), born 19 March 1897, son of Robert Smith McGowan and Alice Clara McGowan of Ao Tea Roa, Dormans Land, Lingfield, Surrey.


Attended Rottingdean Preparatory School.


Attended Sherborne School (Abbeylands) September 1911-July 1915.


WW1, 2nd Lieutenant in the Devonshire Regiment. Commissioned to 3rd Bn. Devonshire Regiment in June 1915; 20 May 1916, went to France, attached to 2nd Bn. He was killed, less than six weeks later at La Boiselle on the Somme on 1 July 1916, aged 19.

Sherborne School: War Memorial Staircase; Book of Remembrance; Abbeylands roll of honour. Mrs McGowan donated £5 towards the Sherborne School War Memorial in memory of her son, 2nd Lieut. J.S. McGowan.
