Details: Robert Hastings Kendle (1876-1915), born 26 March 1876 at Broadlands, Romsey, son of George Robert Kendle (Old Shirburnian; steward and agent) and Lizzie Kendle, Broadlands, Romsey, Hampshire; brother of Francis Clifford Hastings (1877-1924). Married to Lotta Kendle of Lindfield, Avenue Road, Malvern, Worcestershire.


Attended Malvern House preparatory school, Shirley.


Attended Sherborne School (Price's house) January-April 1890.


Attended Weymouth College.


In business in London.


Served in the South African War.


WW1, Major in the Suffolk Regiment, 5th Bn. (T.); as Honorary Captain in Regulars, volunteered for foreign service; 1915, gazetted to Major, made a district Musketry Instructor, and received Volunteer Decoration; went to Gallipoli in July 1915. Killed in a bayonet charge at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli on 12 August 1915. Awarded long service and good conduct medals.
