Details: John Stiby Groves (1893-1916), born 18 July 1893 at Melcombe Bingham, Dorset, son of Ernest Groves and Frances Mary Groves of Armstrong, British Columbia, formerly of 3 Manor Road, Coventry. Brother of Richard Ernest Groves (1896-1917)


Attended St Albans preparatory school, Lyme Regis, Dorset.


Attended Sherborne School (School House) May 1908-December 1910; shooting viii team 1909.


Occupation: Engineer.


Went to Canada.


WW1, enlisted into the CEF at Victoria, British Columbia on 18 December 1914. Corporal in the 30th British Columbia Horse, attached 3rd Canadian Signal Corps as a Motor Despatch Rider. Mortally wounded whilst working on telephone communications in front of Fletre and died in a Casualty Clearing Station at Hazebrouk on 17 January 1916. Buried in Hazebrouk Communal Cemetery: II. E. 1.
