Details: John Stiby Groves (1893-1916), born 18 July 1893 at Melcombe Bingham, Dorset, son of Ernest Groves and Frances Mary Groves of Armstrong, British Columbia, formerly of 3 Manor Road, Coventry. Attended St Albans preparatory school, Lyme Regis, Dorset.
Attended Sherborne School (School House) May 1908-December 1910; shooting viii team 1909.
Went to Canada.
WW1, enlisted into the CEF at Victoria, British Columbia on 18 December 1914. Corporal in the 30th British Columbia Horse, attached 3rd Canadian Signal Corps as a Motor Despatch Rider. Mortally wounded whilst working on telephone communications in front of Fletre and died in a Casualty Clearing Station at Hazebrouk on 17 January 1916. Buried in Hazebrouk Communal Cemetery: II. E. 1.
