Details: William Wallace Edmund Messenger Clark (1895-1916), born 15 November 1895 at the General Lying-in Hospital, York Road, Lambeth London, the only son of Edmund Francis Clark, hotel manager, and Georgina Clark (nee Wallace, later Mrs Henry William James Holmes), of 152 Marylebone Road, Lambeth, London, later of Gool Mansions, Bombay, India, and of Mall View, Mussoorie. Guardian: Miss Clark, Benares, India.


Attended Sherborne Preparatory School.


Attended Sherborne School (Lyon House) September 1911-December 1913.


WW1, On 4 December 1915, joined the London Regiment, (London Scottish) 1/14th Bn. as a Private (Despatch Carrier), Service no.4776. On 1 July 1916, his battalion began the day west of Gommecourt at the Somme. By the end of the day he was missing, last seen in the fourth line German trenches. He was 20 years of age.

Obituary, The Shirburnian, November 1919: 'William Wallace Edmund Messenger Clark, the only son of Mrs Holmes, Mall View, Mussoorie, and the late Edmund Francis Clark, Benares, India; Despatch Carrier, 1st Battalion London Scottish. Missing, 1st July 1916, after the battle of the Somme. Last seen in the fourth line German trenches.'
