Details: Ernest Cecil Gottwaltz, later Ernest Cecil Blencowe Blencowe, born in Derby on 10 March 1881, son of Ernest Gottwaltz and Mrs Gottwaltz of Culworth, Bideford, Devon. Husband of Ellen Mary Blanche Blencowe (daughter of the Rev. Nathaniel Edwards) of Westcott, Budleigh Salterton, Devon.


Attended Saugeen School, Bournemouth.


Attended Sherborne School (The Green) May 1896 - August 1899.


WW1, Captain in the Dorsetshire Regiment, 6th (S.) Bn. Killed 16 February 1916 on the Bluff, near Hill 60, Ypres Salient whilst serving with 'A' Company, 6th Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment.

Sherborne School: War Memorial Staircase; Book of Remembrance; The Green roll of honour. Rev. H.B. Gottwaltz donated £5 towards the Sherborne School War Memorial in memory of his nephew, Capt. E.C.B. Blencowe.


The regimental history states that Captain Blencowe was 'A most cheerful company commander of 'A'. Originally Blencowe-Gottwaltz, he had changed his name to Blencowe-Blencowe, as a precaution against possible capture.'
