Details: Walter Hampton (1892-1915), born 30 March 1892 at Ewell, Surrey. Son of Charles Alfred Hampton and Emma Hampton of Seleng House, Ewell, Surrey. Brother of Lance Corporal John Latham Hampton (1877-1915).


Attended Upland House School, Epsom.


Attended Sherborne School (Abbeylands) May 1905-December 1909. Took part in the 1905 Sherborne Pageant


January 1910, joined the London Rifle Brigade but after a while resigned.


Occupation: Marine insurance broker and underwriter.


WW1, Rifleman in the London Regiment. Rejoined 1st Bn. London Rifle Brigade in August 1914; went to France on 7 November 1914. Shot in the neck by a sniper on 16 January 1915 whilst wiring; evacuated back to England and died from the wound on 14 May 1915 in a nursing home in London.


Buried in St Mary's Churchyard, Ewell (Old Ground 182A), Surrey

Sherborne School: War Memorial Staircase; Books of Remembrance; Abbeylands roll of honour. C.A. Hampton and Captain R.W. Hampton donated £130 towards the Sherborne School War Memorial in memory of Rifleman W. Hampton.
