Details: Herbert Bright Hyland (1894-1916), born 6 December 1894 in Bethersden, Kent, son of Samuel Bright Hyland (partner in Hyland and Rogers, solicitors) and Ellen Hyland (nee Clark) of Beacon House, Bethersden, Ashford, Kent.


Attended Ashford Grammar School, 1905-1910.


Attended Sherborne School (The Green) April 1910-December 1911; Lance Corporal in OTC.


Occupation: Farmer (cattle salesman).


WW1, 2nd Lieutenant in the Welsh Regiment. Enlisted in the East Kent Yeomanry in September 1914; transferred to 20th (S.) Bn (3rd Rhondda), The Welsh Regiment, in Spring 1915, and was Commissioned there in Autumn 1915; transferred to 100th Company, Machine Gun Corps. Went to France in March 1916. Killed in action at High Wood in the battle of the Somme on 19 July 1916.
