Details: Courtenay Noel Walkinshaw Shippard (1899-1916), born 7 December 1889, only son of Mr Courtenay Shippard KC (formerly Chief Justice at Kaloma) and Lady Shippard, Livingstone, Rhodesia, formerly of Cleeve House, Bristol; grandson of Sir Sydney Shippard.


Attended Bradfield preparatory school.


Attended Sherborne School (School House) September 1905-July 1907.


Went to New Zealand in December 1907 on board the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Paparoa


Lived at Makaretu. Next-of-kin named as J. Buchanan (cousin), Makaretu.


WW1, Private in the 1st New Zealand Expeditionary Force: the first to volunteer from the Onga Onga district. Joined Wellington Infantry Bn., in August 1914; landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915; transferred to Machine Gun Corps; wounded and sent home. Went to France and was killed at Armentieres on 10 July 1916.
