Details: John Gibbons (1897-1917), born 11 November 1897, son of Robert Gibbons and Mildred Gibbons of 33 Morton Road, Exmouth, Devon; twin-brother of Henry Gibbons (1897-?), M.C.

 

Attended St Michael's College, Tenbury.

 

Attended Sherborne School (Lyon House) September 1912-August 1916.

 

WW1, 2nd Lieutenant in the Dorsetshire Regiment, 6th Bn. Obtained his commission in January 1917. He died of wounds, aged 19, in hospital at Etaples on 6 June 1917, having been wounded a fortnight previously.

Sherborne School: War Memorial Staircase; Book of Remembrance; no.30 memorial pew in the School chapel; Lyon House roll of honour. R. Gibbons donated £15.5s. towards the Sherborne School War Memorial in memory of his son, 2nd Lieut. J. Gibbons.

 

Lyon House letter, 29 June 1917: 'J. Gibbons (6 Dorsets) died in hospital at Etaples on June 6, from wounds received a fortnight before. He was the first old member of the House to give his life in the War. In hospital his wonderful courage endeared him to all, as we who knew him best would have expected. He always seemed to be fighting well against odds here. No.4 Dormitory will be named after him that others may learn something from his life and death.'
