Details: Gustavus William Musgrave Custance (1882-1914), born 3 June 1882 at Colwall, Worcestershire. Son of the Rev. George Musgrave Custance (1838-1915) and Elizabeth Custance (née Hume) of Colwall Rectory, Malvern, Worcestershire.
Attended [?Glynworth) preparatory school, Cheltenham.
Attended Sherborne School (The Green) September 1896-July 1901; scholar; 6th form; Prefect; Head of House; 1st XV rugby football team 1900.
Attended St Thomas's Hospital, 1901-1907; M.R.C.S.
Naval medical training at The Royal Hospital Haslar 1907- 1908.
Surgeon on HMS Clio, 1911.
WW1, Surgeon in the Royal Navy. Drowned on 15 October 1914 when HMS Hawke was torpedoed by a German submarine which ignited a magazine causing an explosion which ripped the ship apart, with the loss of the captain, 26 officers and 497 men; only 70 of her 594 crew survived.
