Details: Conrad Coryton Betts (1899-1918), born 24 March 1899, son of Cecil Coulter Betts and Louisa Alice Betts, of Knockboy House, Recess, Connemara, Co. Galway, formerly of 12 Park Mansions, Calcutta.

 

Attended Monkstown Park School, Monkstown, Dublin.

 

Attended Sherborne School (The Green) September 1913-July 1917. House Prefect; Corporal in OTC; 2nd XV colours; House XV colours; 2nd XI colours; House XI colours. Left a few days before the end of summer term 1917 to go before the RNAS selection committee.

 

WW1, 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force. Killed on 17 April 1918 in the Aegean Sea owing to engine trouble, while on his way to bomb the Goeben.

Sherborne School: War Memorial Staircase; Book of Remembrance; The Green roll of honour. C.C. Betts and Mrs Betts donated £10 to the Sherborne School War Memorial Account in memory of their son, 2nd. Lt. C.C. Betts.

 

Obituary, The Shirburnian, June 1918: 'CONRAD CORYTON BETTS came to The Green in September 1913; he left in July 1917 to join the R.N.A.S. He was killed on 17th April this year, owing to engine trouble, when flying in the Mediterranean on his way to bomb the Goeben.'
