Details: Albert Lawrence Montague Van der Byl (1893-1922), born 2 March 1893 at Newlands, Cape Colony, son of Charles Lefebre van der Byl and Kate Amy van der Byl (née Eaton), Cape Town, South Africa.
Attended a school in Cape Town, South Africa.
Attended Sherborne School (School House), May 1908-July 1911.
Attended a college in South Africa.
Lieutenant, Royal Air Force. Awarded a Royal Aero Club Aviators’ Certificate at Beatty School, Cricklewood, on 21 April 1917.
Killed on 18 September 1922 in a flying accident in Transvaal, South Africa. Killed when the starboard wing broke off the aircraft (Avro 504K #H9699) and it crashed near Irene. It is reportedly the first fatal military aircraft crash in South Africa.
