Holmdel 9/11 Memorial

A Memorial Service was held on Sunday evening at the Holmdel 9/11 Memorial on Crawfords Corner Road on the Circle. Names of lost loved ones were recited. Candles were lit in their memory. (These pictures were taken after the Memorial Service)

The Holmdel 9/11 Memorial was dedicated in 2004. The Memorial stands 9 feet tall by 11 feet wide and is made from ninety thousand pounds of black granite.

Inside the memorial are letters written by family members to their loved ones and shards of steel from Ground Zero.

The upturned hands convey the idea that we are all in God's hands, according to Holmdel artist Kyle Galante. She sculpted the hands in clay and they were cast in bronze at the Johnson Atelier in Hamilton. The original design included two beams of light emanating from the hands, but technical difficulties necessitated a design change and the lights were not included (two round placeholders in the sculpture remain).

The names of the victims along with fire department, police department, emergency medical services, and Port Authority shields are are inscribed on the Memorial. “Freedom, Faith, Hope, Love, Family, Unity” were chosen by family members. The sidewalk surrounding the sculpture depicts the Pentagon. The flight numbers of the four hijacked planes are displayed on the granite base. A hand-etched image of the World Financial District by artist Philip Hagopian of Vermont is located on the front of the memorial.
