San Francisco: elevation & bike routes
This is a map of San Francisco elevation changes in 5-foot intervals. It's pretty much the simplest thing that I could think to do with the contours shapefile from SFGov (go here for access; you'll need to enter some personal info), but I think it looks pretty cool. I tried to provide some context for this by including an underlay of the peninsula, but the city's own shapefiles didn't quite match up with the elevation contours along the southeastern coastline. Oh well. Mike referred to the color scheme as "piratey", so I kept it.
This is an incremental improvement on my first elevation map, adding a layer on top for bicycle routes and lanes managed by DPT. Dashed lines are designated "bike routes"; the slightly thicker, solid lines are are, apparently, bike lanes. Thanks to Lydia for the suggestion.
As always, best viewed bigger.
(Note: Flickr's resampling turned the reds on this a lot more pink than they appear in the original. Given their brand colors, I suspect that this may have been intentional.)
