Betty (Chab) Krajnik, 74, of Swanton, passed away on Friday, Feb. 25, 2011 in Lincoln.
She was born on May 25, 1936 to Elmer and Blanch (Tupa) Chab.
She attended school in Swanton, Beaver Crossing and Seward County. She graduated from Beaver Crossing High School in 1953 and from Doane College in 1969.
She sarried Robert Krajnik on Aug. 12, 1962.
Betty taught school for 43 years, starting in rural schools near Friend and Beaver Crossing, then in Beaver Crossing, Swanton, Plymouth and Tri-County.
She was a member of the local education associations, Nebraska Education Association, National Education Association, Eastern Nebraska Reading Association, Nebraska Reading Association, National Reading Association, Alpha Gamma Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, Swanton community Club, Swanton American Legion Auxiliary, Swanton Library Society.
She enjoyed family, reading, working with children, listening to country western music and Elvis and working puzzles. One of Betty’s greatest joys was her Story Hour Time spent with area children Wednesday nights since 1976. Children would come from allover the area to enjoy hearing stories and celebrating each of their birthdays and holidays.
In 1987 she received the Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor Award and the Sunshine Award from KOLN/KGIN. In 1991 she received the “Celebrate Literacy Award” from the International Reading Association and the Eastern Nebraska Reading Council. Betty was also instrumental in getting Tri-County students to participate in the Nebraska Reading Classic.
Preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; brother, Kenneth G. Chab; niece and nephews, Kimberly Krajnik, Todd Krajnik and Jay Thornburg.
She is survived by her sisters-in-law Glory Chab, Lolda Thornburg and husband Jim of Beatrice; nieces and spouses, Susan and Stein Swanson, Friend, Linda Placek, DeWitt, Julie and Alan Klecan, Beatrice; nephews and spouses, Brian Krajnik, Western, Jeff and Michelle Thornburg, Omaha; great-nieces and nephews, Ford and Austin Placek, Connor and Andrew Klecan, Claire Thornburg; long time best friend, Delores Barta.
Funeral Services will be hled on Wednesday, March 2 at 10:30 a.m., Kuncl Funeral Home, Wilber. Interment, Wilber Czech Cemetery. Memorials in care of the family to be targeted for a gift of Education and Reading.
