Local cutting vegetables for lunch

Hygiene and sanitary conditions are a big issue in Kampong Phluk. In front of their homes the residents use the lake for brushing their teeth, cooking, washing their dishes, and bathing. Behind their homes, a few meters away, they are using it as a toilet. Here a lady is peeling a pumpkin for lunch. The peel falls into the murky black waters below. This same water was used for washing the vegetable, and will probably be used for cooking food as well. (Siem Reap, Cambodia, Oct. 2008)
