A total of 5 brand new Volvo DH10A-285 engined VLs were built for Dublin Bus by Walter Alexander, Mallusk, Northern Ireland, and were registered over the two years 1997 & 1998, VL 1, (97-D-59001) to VL 4, (97-D-59004), VL 5, (98-D-2005) and all were delivered in a prototype fleet navy/cream livery. Also delivered was a gas powered example in a special 'Clean Gas' all over livery, VL 6, (98-D-2006), which stayed at Donnybrook until year 2000. In December 2007, VL 1 was unveiled in its new role as a mobile education unit, and was/is branded as 'The US Bus' and regularly tours the schools around the city instructing students of the correct behaviour that is expected while travelling by bus.
The VL class operated out of Donnybrook Garage only and stayed in service there until Summer 2009 when the remaining four VLs, (VL 2 - 5) were withdrawn from service. Following withdrawal from Dublin Bus service, all four VLs, VL 2 - 5 were acquired by McColls of Dumbarton, Scotland.
