Painted Poem for Flickr's Deadline Painting Group, June

Faces

(Out Of Africa)

Out of Africa we are but lately come

Bang the drum, bang the drum

Yes, you as well, deny it though you may.

Brothers, sisters,we trekked north, hand in hand

Migrants all, just seeking a better land

More fertile fields to graze our hungry stock

Just fifty thousand years ago, or so

A blink of history's eyelid, well you know

Our luck was in: the world was empty then

No peoples anywhere to turn us out

For preservation of indigenous stock

Oh happy days, we were the indigenous stock

All black, there was no racial hate,

Till evolution sealed our role with Fate

We lost our blackness hue by hue

Much of our humanity too

From Africa we are but lately come

Bang the drum, bang the drum!
