behold: the tantalUS
one part greek mythology, two parts crack at uncle sam and the ever elusive fabled american dream, and a dash of freakishly run-down music box; tantalus is the latest by zoetrope mastermind peter hudson and team.
participants pump hand railway carts which power the spinning stobe-lit animated sculpture. it's most astounding at nighttime, but welders' masks are available to allow it to be viewed in daylight. a hand dangles a golden apple just out of reach of a rising figure, as sledgehammers bang out an eerily out-of-key version of the beginning strains of the national anthem.
