Mission Bay is San Francisco's newest neighborhood. A master-planned redevelopment of about one-half square mile of former railyards and light industry near the waterfront south of downtown, it's a midrise mix of condos, shops, offices and parks, anchored by a medical school campus, a commuter rail terminal, and soon, a basketball arena (there's also a baseball stadium nearby). Under construction since the millennium, it's now entering into later stages of development (these photos were taken in Summer 2010, when it was near its midpoint). In this photoessay, Mission Bay is considered as an example of how to build -- and how not to build -- a 21st Century neighborhood.
