The front of the Terminal. Located in Downtown San Francisco a block south of Market Street and the Financial District, TBT was a massive structure, with wings spanning First and Fremont streets. When built, its South of Market location was near, but outside of downtown; by the late-'90s, when Mayor Willie Brown proposed to relocate the Terminal to a more remote site in order to make way for skyscrapers, it occupied valuable real estate. A compromise was ultimately reached: a new, more attractive regional bus station, including (as-yet not fully funded) underground platforms for California High Speed Rail and a downtown extension of Caltrain, the Peninsula/San Jose rail line, would be built on the same site, funded in part by highrise redevelopment of surrounding parcels. One of those towers, the proposed tallest building on the West Coast, is to be located in the left foreground of this photo.
