Amtrak Pacific Surfliner at San Clemente Pier

The Surfliner between San Luis Obispo and San Diego, in the LOSSAN (Los Angeles-San Diego) corridor, is Amtrak's busiest line outside the Northeast. In far southern Orange County and northern San Diego County, it and Metrolink, the greater-L.A. commuter rail system, operate on a single track immediately beside the beach and just below million-dollar bluff-top homes. At San Clemente Pier Station, served mostly on weekends, passengers disembark more or less directly onto the sand. Talk of converting the Los Angeles-San Diego segment of LOSSAN to high-speed rail goes back to the early '80s, and authorities have continued to consider double-tracking of the coastal segment. The difficulty of doing so is why Caiifornia High-Speed Rail will connect Los Angeles and San Diego via the Inland Empire.
