Rue Cherrier, the Plateau
Montreal's peculiar form of rowhouse vernacular, with its distinctive external staircases, is called the "plex." They are everywhere, all over the island, and they allow population densities to exceed 30,000 per square mile even as few buildings exceed three stories. Incidentally, at right is one of the older cycletracks, or "bike paths" as they're called in Montreal, mentioned in the prevous photo. Note the skinny curb between the path and parked cars, too narrow for wheelchairs.
