Junipero Serra Statue, I-280

Father Junipero Serra, founder of the MIssion Dolores (and thus, of San Francisco) is immortalized at a rest stop alongside Interstate 280 midway between the city and San Jose with this very groovy 1970s-era statue. At right is I-280, often described as the "world's most beautiful freeway" (its surroundings are indeed beautiful; the freeway itself is eight lanes of asphalt). To either side of the freeway are elements of the Hetch Hetchy Project: power lines and the Crystal Springs Reservoir, each originating from a source in Yosemite National Park, which the city Father Serra founded would eventually conquer in its own right. The reservoir, incidentally, lies atop the San Andreas Fault.
