It has been a while since I posted an image of bacteria as seen under the microscope. In analyzing some wastewater samples today sent to me by another wastewater plant that was experiencing some operational problems, I was able to capture some compositionally interesting images that I thought I would share. Here we have a diversity of different types of bacteria and stalked ciliates. The long stringy filamentous bacteria that are seen forming multistranded filament bundles are what is causing the upset in this particular wastewater plant. This image was taken under a Nikon phase contrast microscope with a 10x objective. The filaments are about 1 micron wide (1/1000 of a mm).
