McCaskill, Johnson Meet with Israeli Security Minister

Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Ranking Member Claire McCaskill and Committee Chairman Republican Ron Johnson met today with Gilad Erdan, Israel’s Public Security and Strategic Affairs Minister.

“Israel is one of our nation’s most important allies, and I was glad to hear from Minister Erdan about his country’s work to prevent and respond to national security threats,” McCaskill said. “As leaders of the Senate’s Homeland Security Committee, today’s meeting was a good chance for us to talk about how we can strengthen our shared efforts to fight terrorism and keep our country safe.”

McCaskill and Erdan discussed terrorism prevention—including protecting against ‘lone wolf’ attacks and attacks on public spaces like restaurants and bus stations—and ways to enhance cybersecurity.

McCaskill began serving as the top-ranking Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee in January. Her legislation to address the threat of agro-terrorism recently passed the Senate, and she is currently working on bipartisan, bicameral legislation to ensure that the Department of Homeland Security’s cyber mission is a top-tier priority. Last week, she introduced a bill to reauthorize the Department of Homeland Security’s program that targets transnational criminal organizations on the border and at U.S. ports in order to combat drug and weapons trafficking and other crimes.
