Hudson River State Hospital
built first from 1868 to 1871 in a gothic style kirkbride design, the hudson river state hospital quietly sits on a green hill with a spectacular view on a river and the mountainous landscape all around it.. surrounded by a quiet wooden area, the former asylum continued to expand until the 20th century and at its peak, around the 50’s, the hospital counted more than 40 buildings on the land and was hosting & treating over 6,000 patients.. around the 70’s as the changes in the treatment of mental illness were making large scale mental facilities relics & obsolete, buildings started to close years after years, to finally & completely shut down in 2001..

now remaining silent and empty with its many wards and rooms still untouched, the beautiful asylum is now a national historic landmark and hopefully will stay for the years to come..
