    Nah... it didn't show up until 1899, after the fire.

    Click through to the link there and scroll to the bottom. Looks like it was burned by arsonists in 1938, and then this replica was put up in its stead.

    FWIW, I'm trying to trackdown the whereabouts of a totem pole given to Tokyo by Seattle in 1951. And hoping to give a presentation in a couple of months.
