First Panda Cub Exam

    Newer Older

A giant panda cub at the San Diego Zoo received its first veterinary exam this morning. The quick, 3-minute exam allowed staff just enough time to determine that the cub is healthy, thriving and weighs 1.5 pounds. Vets were able to listen to the cub's heart and lungs - which sounded good - but were not able to determine the sex.

The paws of this cub might be tiny now, but they will grow into one of the most interesting paws in the animal kingdom. Giant pandas have a pseudo thumb, which enhances their ability to gather and eat bamboo. No other species of bear has this distinctive trait.

This is the sixth giant panda born at the San Diego Zoo, the most born at a breeding facility outside of China. All six giant panda births have been to mother Bai Yun. The previous cub born at the San Diego Zoo was a male named Yun Zi. Born on Aug. 5, 2009, his name means "son of cloud." sandiegozoo.org

Please name the baby panda Han Nan Qi Shi (Brave Son who enlightens many) ♥ ♥ ♥ in memory of Trent Williams. Trent was a wonderful little boy here in Strasburg Virginia that had brain cancer. The cancer cut his young life short. He was 8 years old. His heroic efforts to fight the aggressive cancer brought a community together. He was a wonderful boy who's heart was always thinking of other's. Also, your little baby panda was born on the very day our Trent left his pain behind him and went to the glory of the next path. He loved pandas so very much!!!!! So please consider the request we are all sending to the San Diego Zoo to name your new arrival Trent. Thank you for your consideration!!!!!

The new baby panda deserves a name like Ju-Long, meaning Powerful Gigantic Dragon, or Chen Bao, meaning Great Treasure Respectfully, Patricia Godwin

I think you should name our new little guy "Armstrong" for our brave space explorer who passed recently. He was a ground breaking astronaut and this new little panda baby is part of a ground breaking effort to increase the panda numbers. Congratulations. So adorable

The panda is so cute! So sad about the death of National Zoo's baby panda. It makes me wonder that wouldn't it be more EFFECTIVE to just build a BIG panda sanctuary and hires a group of scientists to continuously monitor, refine and upgrade their CAGE-LESS HOME to prevent panda extinction vs. locking them in the zoo to gain profits and as lab rats???
