World's lightest bicycle @ Het Fairwheel Podium, Portland, OR

A few years ago a certain Günter Mai developed a sub 3kg bicycle otherwise known as Spin. At the time it was the world’s lightest bike weighting incredible 2967.7g (6.54lb).

Then Herr Mai developed some health problems, stopped riding, and the bike was sold in pieces to various cycling aficionados around the world. The current owned of the bike and Fairwheel Bike have (re)built the bike in a slightly different configuration and they succeeded in reducing the weight of the bike to just under 2.7kg.

So how does it feel? Well, it’s soooo light, it’s disgusting. I certainly can’t ride it since it is much too small for me (my road bike is 64cm and this one is about 51cm). The low weight makes it feel like a toy, but it is meant to be ridden and it has already covered about 12,000 miles. Just about any part on it is custom made or is some sort of prototype so it’s very hard to put a price on it but according to some estimates it's in $45,000 neighborhood.

The specs of the current bike please are available here, a cool write-up is here, and finally the bike in its original configuration is here
