Convocation 2010 Exhibit Case

Shown here is the left-hand side an exhibit case dedicated to the Convocation ceremony at the College of William and Mary. The exhibit is on display from August to September 2010 just inside the front doors in the Earl Gregg Swem Library. The exhibit includes photographs, programs, artifacts, and a yearbook to document the history of Convocation at the College.

The following information is from the label text presented in the case:

Opening Convocation marks the beginning of a new academic year at the College of William and Mary. On the first Friday of the academic year, faculty, staff, and students gather at the Wren Building to welcome incoming freshmen to the College. There were no Opening Convocations from 1972-1992. This tradition was revived in 1993 by President Timothy J. Sullivan as part of the 300th Anniversary celebration of the College. Each year, a speaker is invited to address the new class.

This Convocation Address from President Thomas Dew in 1836 is among the earliest records documenting Convocation at the College.

Maya Angelou, author and poet, speaking at the 1993 Opening Convocation, the first to be held at the College since 1971.

Henry C. Wolf, Rector of the College of William and Mary, will be the speaker for the 2010 Convocation ceremony. Mr. Wolf received a bachelor's degree from the College in Economics in 1964 and in 1966 received his law degree from the William and Mary Law School. Mr. Wolf retired from Norfolk Southern in 2007 after 34 years, the last 14 as the CEO. In addition to his service on the Board of Visitors, he also is an emeritus member of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science Council (1993-2001), and in 2006, the Law School’s expanded and renovated library was named the Wolf Law Library in recognition of him. At left, Henry C. Wolf’s senior year photograph from the 1964 Colonial Echo.
