Mardi Gras: The Legendary Roots Crew
A little over a week ago, I had the privilege of finally getting a chance to see one my favorite hip-hop groups perform.... The Roots. Ever since that days of “I shall…. PROCEED…”, I’ve been a big fan. Others that might not know of their history, will possibly recognize them as Jimmy Fallon’s late night band. Over the years, I’ve constantly heard of how great they were in their live performance. And I’ve got to say, all that I’ve heard was true!!!! They really put on an amazing show. From the moment they hit the stage, and until the show ended, everything was packed full of great energy. So if there are any fans of the Legendary Roots Crew out there, definitely try to catch them the next time they’re in your town. You won’t be disappointed.
This was one of various concerts that Universal puts on during its Mardi Gras celebration. Although I was only here this night to see the concert, I kinda wish I would’ve been able to see the parade. Now, I could’ve; but then I wouldn’t be as close to the stage as I was (like 8 standing people deep).
As far as my gear for this concert, I equipped my T1i with the Sigma 30mm. I was quite nervous on how these pics would eventually turn out; but I was very impressed. I also don’t have much experience shooting stage shows (except with a normal zoom lens), so that was a concern. Now I knew that I’d have to sacrifice with the dof (I wish it wasn’t so shallow), but I really wanted speed here. Heck, I probably could’ve been alright with my normal lens (which I also had on me), but I didn’t wanna risk it. And it was a little too packed to start switching out lenses. But even more impressive was that I turned on all of the focus points, to let the camera decide of where focus should be. It was pretty damn risky; but I was shooting blindly over people’s heads, so I had to give up that control. But I’ll tell ya, it hit focus on the main subject way more times than not. So this I was one instance where I really have to give it up to the gear. Kudos!!!!
