This is a detail at the fountain on the Alter Markt–near Cologne City Hall–in an afternoon reflection, telling the end of a unilateral love story… Griet, a market tender girl, did not reciprocate the passionate love of a poor fellow named Jan. When he asked her to marry her, she refused, because she thought she was of a better standing and wanted to find someone rich.

 

Years, later, a handsome rider passed by her market stand, and soon she recognized a now rich and famous Jan. „Griet, wer et hätt jedonn!“ (Griet, hättest du es doch getan!) he told her, taking off his hat. She answered him: „Jan, wer et hätt jewoss!“ (Jan, wer konnte das wissen!). ("Griet, who had done it; Jan, who had known it") General Jan van Werth then got back up on his horse, and rode away:
