San Francisco's Bay Bridge, the old and new...

Newer Older

A somewhat unusual view of the Bay Bridge–which closed early this morning for the long Labor Day weekend–and the lighthouse near Treasure Island, with the keeper's residence hiding beneath the trees; it now serves as a dwelling for Coast Guard admirals.

The Yerba Buena Lighthouse was first lit in 1875 and the light is still operational. The lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places:

I took this image from the piers on the San Francisco's side of the Bay, during a particularly foggy morning (or was it hazy from the smoke of the L.A. fires?) The grey-in-grey colors are almost hiding all details of the East Bay.

Wait, the Bay Bridge closes for Labor Day weekend? Is this a regular thing, or a maintenance thing?

zecaruso, they are done with changing parts of the roadway, but have discovered a crack in one of the supporting chains:

fingle, yes they did this during the long weekend, plus Friday last. Still hoping it will open Tuesday 05:00; see the article for more info... New info as of Monday: Opening delayed to Wednesday morning 05:00h!

Updated 09/08/2009: The bridge opened 07:00 this morning!

That's going to total up to an astoundingly expensive repair, in every aspect! Ah, California! Never one to do things by halves, are we?
