Windows VMs in VMWare

I wasted an entire workday today trying to get my windows VMs sorted out for browser testing. I had installed the Internet Explorer Collection, which ended up ruining everything (the installed IE would behave erratically, display wrong version info, and generally everything was pretty much fucked up), and I had to re-install from scratch all these windows VMs because there is no uninstaller and I thought I would never get this shit properly removed from the system.

Do NOT ever use any of this several-versions-of-IE-shit (Multiple IE, Internet Explorer Collection, etc.). They will ruin your system and cause havoc. I have certainly learned this lesson today.

The only safe thing to do is have multiple completely autonomous and separate windows systems, each with its own clean install of some version of IE (and no other version installed in parallel!).

I have two Win XPs with IE6 and IE7, respectively, and a Win 7 RC with IE8. All of these systems also contain the latest Firefox and Opera. Win 7 comes with IE8 pre-installed, while my XP has IE6, so it made sense to leave the Win 7 and one of the Win XP as-is and update the other to IE7. Actually, I only installed the Win XP once and then simply duplicated the entire VM. So far, it seems to work fine.

You have no idea how much I hate this day. I am going to wash my hands with acid to get all of this windows pus off of me.
