Flickr - April Fools 2012, Mac Classic OS / MacPaint-inspired web design

A screenshot from 4/1/2012, where we decided to make the site look like the original (Classic) Macintosh OS, including the use of Bill Atkinson's dithering algorithm originally used in Mac applications like MacPaint and HyperCard.

Given the dithering and intentional lack of anti-aliasing, it's best to view this photo at original size.

I worked mostly on the "boot sequence", and the CSS that threw the year back to roughly 1984; Stephen Woods wrote his own JavaScript implementation of the dithering based on Atkinson's original method. Despite being black and white, it really gives images a characteristic look. Eric Gelinas, local Maps guru, also swapped out our map tiles to use ones from Stamen which fit the theme nicely.

If you missed seeing the prank in action, look at the screencast.
