New York State Completion Day, Wednesday, October 3, 2012
Schenectady County Community College participated in New York State Completion Day on October 3, 2012, an initiative of all 37 community colleges in New York state.

The 30 State University of New York (SUNY) and seven City University of New York (CUNY) community colleges set aside Wednesday, Oct. 3, to send a simple message: Students who complete an associate degree have better prospects for jobs, scholarships and transfer to four-year schools.

SCCC students signed a large banner in Elston Hall pledging to complete their degree or certificate programs. Other highlights included a presentation on mentoring, “Effective and Transforming Mentoring for Desired Outcomes,” by Dr. Quintin Bullock, SCCC President, and an alumni panel, attended by current SCCC students, at which Angela West-Davis and Rebecca Benjamin spoke about what contributed to their success at SCCC. Dr. Stacy Grant, who graduated from SCCC with an A.S. in Science at SCCC in 2003, participated in the discussion via Skype. Dr. Grant went on to earn a B.S. in Chemistry from SUNY Buffalo and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Kent State. She is the Team Leader in the Air Force’s Explosives Properties Laboratory at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.

“We want our students to succeed and be able to achieve their goals through higher education with the degrees they are working toward,” Dr. Bullock said. “It’s important for us to come together to discuss the College Completion Agenda, strategies, and best practices to help students succeed.”

New York’s two-year colleges each planned multiple Completion Day events. The state’s community colleges adopted the slogan “Commit. Complete. Compete” for Oct. 3, 2012.
