Facial Reconstruction

What to do when the countenance of your subject is inexplicably damaged? Nothing to do but manual reconstruction, if not recapturing the original physiognomy, then at least bringing out the general spirit of it. This is a detail from a work in progress, in which both of the subjects displayed an inordinate amount of facial trauma. The result of an over-zealous portrait painter, or the corrosion of years? Who can tell?
