Turkana Basin Writers Conference 2012
Stony Brook Southampton’s MFA program in Creative Writing and Literature hosted its first-ever, 10-day Turkana Basin Writers Conference in January. MFA program director Julie Sheenan was joined by Conference Coordinator Christian McLean, playwriting Professor William Westbrook Burford, and Administrative Coordinator Adrienne Unger. Sheehan also invited as guest faculty Bob Holman, a poet and poetry activist ideally suited to introducing the students to a creative process based on aural stimuli instead of words written or printed on a page. The conference included a two-day safari as well as eight days at the Turkana Basin Institute.
