Grinnell Glacier, Glacier National Park, MT

Glacier National Park: A land of glacier carved valleys and U-shaped canyons, a land of immeasurable beauty and a land of jaw-dropping sceneries.

Yet, for all it has, the one thing it lacks in, is ironically its glaciers. There are a few glaciers, but none that achieve the volume or size of the great Alaskan, Patagonian or the Himalayan glaciers. What glaciers exist here are but a tiny shadow of the massive behemoths that ruled here during the ice age and was responsible for all its features.

During the summer in a heavy snow year, me and my buddies hiked up to the top of the Grinnell Glacier overlook, a ridiculously steep trail rivaling that of the trail to Mt Dana. And it ends in an overlook surrounded by slippery rocky loose scree all around.

But what I remember most vividly about that location was the howling winds that threatened to shift my balance onto the wrong side of the slippery slope. I carefully made my way along the scree until I got to a view point good enough for a panorama.
