The forest takes its name from the Romans, who called Scotland, Caledonia. The Caledonian Forests were formed at the end of the last ice age as a vast wilderness of Scots pine, birch, rowan, aspen, juniper, oak and a few other species. An Eco system all of its own with ferns, mosses and lichens. Also the habitat for many birds and mammals found nowhere else.
The wonders just to walk through it leave powerful memories that will never be forgotten.
Much of the remaining Caledonian pine forest is fully protected.
