Chapter House - Merton Priory

Excavations revealing the walls of the Chapter House of Merton Priory. The Priory existed from 1117 untill 1538 and the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII. The stones from the abandoned Priory were used to build Henry VIII greatest residence Nonsuch Palace in Surrey. Important events at the Priory include

1114 Canons arrive to found new monastery founded by Gilbert the Norman

1118 Queen Matilda visits with Prince William

1125 Nicholas Breakspeare (only English Pope) arrives to become Augustinian Canon

1130 Gilbert Beckett sends son Thomas to school at the priory

1202 King John visits Priory

1236 King Henry and nobles present when the Statutes of Merton were formulated

1310 Merton pleads it is oppressed by poverty, Pope accuses it of making excessive grants and leases

1318 Priory threatened with excommunication by the church

1412 Privy Council held at Merton

1437 Henry VI crowned at Merton

1538 The priory was surrendered to the crown induring the Dissolution under Henry VIII
